Derived from the Marathi words Shaniwar (Saturday) and Wada (residence complex), the foundation stone of this palace was laid by Peshwa Bajirao I on Saturday, the 10th of January 1730, and the house warming ceremony was performed on Saturday, the 22nd of January 1732. The seat of the Peshwa (titular Prime Minister) rulers of the Maratha Empire, this imposing structure has since been the most important landmark of Pune city.
